Surinamese artists donate painting to CARICOM Secretariat

A group of artists from Suriname who were in Guyana to showcase their work at the Suriname Art Expo, on Friday presented the CARICOM Secretary-General with a painting for the CARICOM Secretariat. The presentation took place at the CARICOM Secretariat. The painting was a collaborative effort of all the artists whose work was on exhibition from April 19-21, 2017. The artists were from the Federation of Visual Artists in Suriname(FVAS).

In a brief address to the artists, CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, welcomed them to Guyana and commended them for the work that they were doing which he said was important in enhancing the culture of the Region. He also encouraged them to expand their exhibition to other CARICOM Member States.

The exhibition at the Umana Yana in Georgetown was part one of an exchange programme between Suriname and Guyana and will include a return visit of Guyanese artists to Suriname.


Three-day Suriname Art Expo underway at Umana Yana, Guyana

Art enthusiasts in Guyana now have the opportunity to see the work of artists from Suriname at the Suriname Art Expo which is being held at the Umana Yana Georgetown Guyana.

The three-day event was officially declared open on Wednesday and features 15 artists who are members of the Federation of Visual Artists in Suriname. The exhibition is part one of an exchange programme between Suriname and Guyana and will include a return visit of Guyanese artists to Suriname.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Expo, Assistant Secretary General, Trade and Economic Integration at the CARICOM Secretariat, Mr. Joseph Cox, said that the exchange programme fitted into the framework of the Community’s Strategic Plan.

“Culture is seen as a pillar for building economic and social resilience, as well as strengthening CARICOM identity and spirit of the Community. Culture is a unifying force in regionalism and important to the success of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy. Culture promotes social cohesion and inclusiveness and contributes to wealth creation and the reduction of poverty,” he said.

Suriname Art Expo

A group of Surinamese artists, with help from the CARICOM Secretariat and Governments of Guyana and Suriname, will be visiting Guyana April 19-21 to host an Art Expo. They are from the Federation of Visual Artists Suriname (FVAS). The exhibition will last for three days from 10:00 hrs – 17:00 hrs at Umana Yana on Main Street in Georgetown and is titled ‘SURINAME ART EXPO 2017’.

This exhibition  is part one of an exchange programme between Suriname and Guyana in the field of Visual Art. The second part of the exchange will be a return visit of Guyanese artists to Suriname.

Work by artists Anand Binda, Robbert Enfield, Glenn Fung Loy, Soeki Irodikromo, Sri Irodikromo, Dakaya Lenz, Dhiradj Ramsamoedj, Ardie Setropawiro, George Struikelblok, Sancha Sullivan, Manuela Tjin A Soe, Patrick Tjon and Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi will be showcased at the event.
