Cultural traditions, country colours, costumes on show as CARIFESTA XIII opens


Opening Ceremony CARIFESTA XIII

After having to be rescheduled due to Tropical storm Harvey, CARIFESTA XIII officially opened Sunday evening in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The Caribbean Region’s premier festival was declared open by Barbados Culture Minister, the Hon. Stephen Lashley at a ceremony held at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. Prime Minister of Barbados, the Right Hon. Freundel Stuart, and Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, as well as Barbados Ministers of Government, officials from the CARICOM Secretariat and delegations from across the Region and observer countries were at the opening.

The proceedings began with a parade of countries showcasing their cultural traditions and wearing their country colours and costumes. The parade began at Queens Park and ended at the Kensington Oval. Before the ceremony began, each country that was represented paraded at the front of the Oval, showcasing a fusion of regional cultures, colours and ingenuity.


CARIFESTA XIII Grand Market gets underway today

The Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre  in Barbados was a buzz of activity on Friday in preparation for the opening of the CARIFESTA XIII Grand Market which will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at noon. Vendors and exhibitors were busy preparing their booths, mounting their displays and making general arrangements. Minister of Culture, Barbados Hon. Stephen Lashley was there to oversee the activities.

Our Communications Officer at CARIFESTA spoke to the Minister who said that all activities in the CARIFESTA XIII schedule are still on despite the disruption cause by Tropical Storm Harvey.   He also encouraged persons to visit the Grand Market and Buyers Shopping Mall to witness various aspects of the Region’s culture on display.

CARIFESTA XIII Opening Ceremony now on Sunday


The Opening Ceremony of the 13th edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) will now be held on Sunday 20 August, 2017. The Festival was scheduled to be opened on this evening, but the passage of Tropical Storm Harvey forced its postponement.
