Barbados has big impact on the world – CARICOM SG


(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has lauded Barbados  as it celebrates its 51st Independence Anniversary on 30 November, 2017, describing it as “a small state which has made a big impact on the world”.

In a message to the Prime Minister of Barbados, the Rt Hon. Freundel Stuart, the Secretary-General said that regional integration has benefitted from the unwavering, valuable involvement of the Government and people of Barbados, as evidenced by its commitment and guidance to the completion of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

“The outstanding leadership displayed most recently in the successful hosting of CARIFESTA XIII in August 2017, despite having to brace for the passage of Tropical Storm Harvey, was one of the countless occasions when Barbados demonstrated its profound sense of community and its deep commitment to the Community,” Secretary-General LaRocque stated.  (more…)

CARIFESTA XIII Opening Ceremony now on Sunday


The Opening Ceremony of the 13th edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) will now be held on Sunday 20 August, 2017. The Festival was scheduled to be opened on this evening, but the passage of Tropical Storm Harvey forced its postponement.

Barbados gets ‘all clear’ after Tropical Storm Harvey

The Department of Emergency Management has issued the All Clear for Barbados following the passage of Tropical Storm Harvey, the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) announced Friday morning.

Public and private sector workers are asked to resume work at noon today.

The Transport Board will have a staggered start of service in preparation for the resumption of work, the BGIS said, while asking persons to be careful and vigilant.

The storm hit Barbados last evening with flooding in several areas and damage to property being reported.

The Opening Ceremony of CARIFESTA XIII, scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, August 18, at Kensington Oval, has been postponed due to the approach of Tropical Storm Harvey.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, made the disclosure this evening, and explained that the preparations for the impending weather system had greatly impacted the arrangements for the opening ceremony.

“The national response ahead of the system has forced the cancellation of the mandatory dress rehearsal which was scheduled to be held at Kensington Oval this evening…  Immediate measures have also had to be taken to safeguard equipment at the venue,” Mr. Lashley stated. (more…)
