Haiti cancels Sunday’s Presidential elections

Haiti’s electoral council has called off the second round of the presidential election scheduled for Sunday 24 January, citing security reasons. No new date was set for the elections, already postponed twice.
The latest postponement comes as protests continue in the streets of capital Port au Prince over the conduct and outcome of the first round of elections in October.
Ruling party candidate Jovenel Moise, with 33 percent of the votes emerged as the front runner in the October poll. Second placed Jude Celestin trailed him by eight percentage points, and said last week he would not take part in the election, alleging the first round vote was rigged to favor the ruling party candidate.
President Michel Martelly is constitutionally required to leave office by Feb. 7, adding intrigue to the current political stalemate.
