Jamaica successfully stages second KingstOOn Animation Conference
The second edition of the KingstOOn Animation Conference and Festival staged from 12 – 13 March, 2016, at the Edna Manley College in Kingston, Jamaica, was attended by hundreds of professional animators, students, artists, investors and other animation supporters from across the Caribbean, diaspora and around the world. The festival was hosted by the Government of Jamaica through the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology in collaboration with the World Bank and the Caribbean Development Bank.
The festival was intended to catalyse the growth of the animation industry in Jamaica and to attract the attention of international clients for animation services that can be provided by talented Jamaicans. The festival reflects the commitment of the Jamaican Government to stimulate the growth of the local animation industry and to establish Jamaica as an animation hub in the Caribbean.
The festival featured speakers from the Caribbean and diaspora such as Camille Selvon Abrahams (Animae Caribe, Trinidad and Tobago), Saïdou and Yoane (Parallel 14, Martinique) and Caiphus Moore (Electronic Arts, Trinidad and Tobago/USA). Other international experts were Hernan LaGreca (Cartoon Network), Joel Kuwahara and Brad Ableson (Bento Box), Antonio Morales (Ink Apache), Carlos Arguello (Studio C), Navdeep Singh (The Mill), Mike Buckland (Triggerfish Studios), Carlos Biern (BRB Internacional), Devon Shepard (Running with Scissors), James Parris (Paper Tiger Films), Don Perro and Adam Sale (Capilano University) and Florian Wagner (Bardel Entertainment Inc).
Other components in the festival included master classes, panel discussions, speed meetings, screening of animated short films and an exhibition.
The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) also launched its latest New Generation CAPE Animation and Game Design Syllabus on Saturday 12 March, 2016, at the festival. CAPE Animation and Game Design will be taught in schools from September, 2016, and the first examination will be offered in May/June 2017.
