Hurricane season begins

Today, 1 June, marks the official start of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season.

Weather experts are predicting an average season with about 14 named storms, eight hurricanes and three major hurricanes. Major hurricanes are those at Category 3 and above (above 111 miles-per-hour) on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The season officially ends on 30 November.
