CARICOM Secretary-General hails Jamaica at 55

Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has lauded the distinguished contribution of Jamaica to the world as the country celebrates its 55th independence anniversary on 6 August, 2017.

In a Message to the Government and People of Jamaica, the Secretary-General said Jamaica’s development has been fueled by the “renowned creativity of its people,” since it attained nationhood.

The country has achieved significant progress while maintaining the “highest standards of democracy and adherence to the rule of law,” he added.

In commending the CARICOM Member State in reaching its 55th independence anniversary, Secretary-General LaRocque said the theme which underpins the celebration  ‘Celebrating Jamaicans at home and abroad’ acknowledged the contribution that its citizens have made to making ‘Brand Jamaica’ one of the most recognisable globally.

“Jamaicans have distinguished themselves in sport, culture, business, academics and many other fields regionally and internationally,” the Secretary-General said.

“The basis for continued development has been laid and the Caribbean Community, of which Jamaica is a founding signatory and a leading Member State, will maintain its support to the country’s efforts to achieve even greater levels of development,” he added.
