Barbadians elect their first woman Prime Minister

Barbadians on Thursday voted overwhelmingly for change, giving the opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) of lawyer Mia Mottley all 30 seats in the country’s Parliament.
Ms Mottley is expected to be sworn in Friday as Barbados’ first woman Prime Minister. She told cheering supporters at her Party’s Headquarters last night “the victory is not mine, not the Barbados Labour Party, this victory is the people of Barbados victory”.
Outgoing Prime Minister Mr Freundel Stuart last night took responsibility for his party’s heavy defeat.
“Let me unhesitatingly and unequivocally and frankly accept full responsibility for the defeat of the Democratic Labour Party in the election,” he said.
