CBU members join global relay to celebrate World Radio Day 2015
Radio stations from the Caribbean will be an integral part of the relay of radio services across the globe tomorrow Friday, February 13 to mark World Radio Day.
Under the theme, ‘Innovation, Youth and Radio’, the UNESCO-promoted event is being coordinated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and sister organization to CBU, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Participating stations will transmit programming dedicated to the theme for half-hour slots before handing-over to fellow stations. Three (3) members of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) will be taking part in the 24-hour broadcasting relay across time zones: the Caribbean Super Station, heard in US VI, and HOTT 93 based in Trinidad and Tobago. The final station in the twenty-four hours of international programming will be the Voice of Guyana.
In Geneva, at the ITU headquarters, where it celebrates its 150th anniversary, the day will begin with a hackathon among young innovators and software developers, and will end with the World Radio Day concert by the UN Jazz Ensemble.
Especially for the day, UNESCO has produced royalty-free audio, video and written broadcasters for broadcasters to use on air, websites and via social media channels. The content includes interviews, radio shows, articles, infographics and sound bites.
The CBU is a grouping of media entities from twenty-two (22) countries and territories, including radio and television broadcasters in the English, Dutch and Spanish-speaking Caribbean. The Union’s mandate includes capacity-building of media institutions and professionals; joint negotiation of rights for programming; and advocacy in regional and international forums on policy and technology issues.
