CDB delegates applaud young artists for creativity



Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 22, 2015 (SKNIS): The winners and runners up of the Youth Vybzing Spoken Word Challenge were applauded for their creativity and social consciousness on Thursday, May 21, by delegates attending the 45th Board of Governors’ Meeting of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
James Galloway received US$1,000 in the 30-35 year category for his winning performance of Message from the Future – which chronicled a successful future for local creative artists and young people in general and the formula to get there. Quinn Martin earned the top spot and the US$1,000 cash prize in the 16-29 age category. His piece titled From the ‘Eart’ called for young people to use their talent and get involved in creative expression rather than chasing quick money through negative activities on the street.
Runners up in the 16-29 range were Wricherley Gumbs with Potential and These Inhibitions; and Jonelle Irish with Naked Truth. A Reality Unimagined by Mervil Nisbett was adjudged the winner of the People’s Choice category. The Bank came into existence for the purpose of contributing to the harmonious economic growth and development of the member countries in the Caribbean and promoting economic cooperation and integration among them, having special and urgent regard to the needs of the less developed members of the Region (Article 1 of the Agreement establishing CDB). A synopsis of the performances were shown in a video presentation and the young oral artists were commended by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris and CDB officials for the inspiring and thought-provoking content in their performances.
The Spoken Word Challenge was organized by the CDB in collaboration with the St. Kitts Department of Youth. The event was held on May 08 and was organized as part of activities for the 45th Board meeting. (Caribbean Development Bank Press Release)
