CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has extended heartiest congratulations to the athletes from Member States who excelled at the IAAF World Championships which ended in Beijing, China on Sunday.

The Secretary-General sent special kudos to Jamaican sprinters Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price who continued their reign over the world’s best with dominating performances. Bolt, the world’s fastest man, successfully defended his 100 and 200-metre titles and anchored the successful men’s 4 x 100 relay team.  Fraser-Pryce, the world’s fastest woman, also successfully defended her 100-metre title and anchored the women’s emphatic retention of their 4 x 100-metre relay title.

Ambassador LaRocque also acknowledged Jamaica’s  winning women’s 1600-metres relay team,  hurdler Danielle Williams who took gold in the women’s 110-metre event, and their fellow athletes from The Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago, with two medals each, and Grenada with one, who “did the Community proud”.

“These young CARICOM citizens continue to provide a fine example to us all of how opportunities can be seized through combining skills and talent with commitment and hard work,” the CARICOM Secretary-General said.
