In Trinidad and Tobago, 315 candidates seek votes today

TODAY is Local Government election day. Weeks of hectic campaigning are over and voters now go to the polls to determine who will be successful candidates in the 137 electoral districts that are up for grabs and who will control the 14 Local Government corporations in Trinidad. The ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) currently controls eight of these corporations.
The PNM enters today’s election with an advantage having already won the Mon Repos/Navet district in the San Fernando City Corporation when the United National Congress’ (UNC’s) candidate dropped out of the race citing ill health. The UNC currently controls six Corporations.
The PNM is fielding 137 candidates in today’s elections while the UNC has 135. Both parties are contesting districts in all corporations.
