Several killed in vehicular accident in Haiti

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, Jan 10, CMC – At least 20 people were killed and several others wounded when a bus carrying 64 passengers overturned after it collided with a truck on Sunday, police and health authorities have confirmed.

They said the accident occurred at Morne La Crête, a locality in the north-west of Haiti, about f50 kilometers from Port-de-Paix.

The National Ambulance Center (CAN) of Haiti said 11 of those killed died at the scene of the accident and that several of the wounded had been taken to the Gros Morne hospital and to Gonaives.

It said most of the injured are in serious condition.

The police said that the cause of the accident remains unknown, but noted that it occurred in an area where work is being undertaken on the bad roads.

Survivors of the crash said that prior to the accident, the driver of the bus made several stops so that the mechanic could affect repairs to the vehicle.

The unidentified driver who survived the accident, is reported to have fled the scene of the first major accident in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
