Residents of the Windward Islands and other parts of the Southern Caribbean have been told to brace for heavy rains and strong gusty winds from as early as later today as a tropical depression in the Atlantic makes its way towards the area.

The US National Hurricane Centre says the weather system, which, at 8:00 this morning was located about 700 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands, has an 80 percent chance of developing into a tropical storm or hurricane during the next two days.

As of Monday night, the area of low pressure was moving west- to west-north-westward at about 20 mph, and associated showers and thunderstorms were becoming better organized, the Centre said.
