St. Vincent and the Grenadines continued celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of the historic Botanical Gardens with a  ceremony to mark the arrival and planting of the first breadfruit, brought to the country on 23 January 1793 by Captain Bligh of Mutiny of the Bounty fame.

The event made the Gardens famous worldwide because of the mutiny that took place on Captain Bligh’s first ill-fated attempt on the Bounty to collect breadfruit and other plants from Tahiti for the then West Indian colonies. A third-generation breadfruit tree – a sucker from the original plant is among the Garden’s current attractions.
