The Bahamas – Joaquin’s impact by island

Bahamas_NEMA_2NASSAU, The Bahamas – The following is the latest report, in bullet form, as of 4 p.m. EDT, provided by the National Emergency Management Agency, in co-ordination with local government officials from islands affected by Hurricane Joaquin:

RUM CAY:

  • One Shelter on the island activated, 16 Occupants – Pond is rising and there is risk of potential flooding, so they are looking for an alternative location in this event.
  • Winds gusting 50-70 mph
  • Flooding on the northern side of the island, and there are people being evacuated
  • No reports of damages or road blockages
  • Land and Cell lines still operational
  • Power still available

 

SAN SALVADOR:

  • Shelters activated, one occupied (St. Augustine’s) with 15 occupants and more expected
  • Winds approximately 50 mph
  • No reports of flooding (very little rain)
  • No reports of damages
  • Land and Cell lines operational
  • Power intermittent

 

ACKLINS:

  • No shelters activated
  • Winds gusting 80-90 mph
  • Major flooding
  • Damages to homes from flooding and wind
  • Land Cell Lines intermittent
  • Power intermittent

 

EXUMA:

  • Nine shelters activated, One occupied with 2 occupants
  • Winds 25-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph
  • Flooding still mostly passable, and no reports of damages
  • Land and Cell Lines intermittent – Technicians on Islands dealing with the issues as they arise
  • Power Intermittent

 

LONG ISLAND:

  • All nine shelters activated, only one occupied (Clarence Town Community Center) with 9 occupants
  • Winds approximately 55 mph and intensifying
  • Flooding from coastal waters and rising tides (vary little rain), particularly in Mangrove Brush and Petties. Beach and Pond erosion
  • Damages to homes from flooding, roads still mostly passable
  • Land and Cell lines operational
  • Power off in Clarence Town

 

CAT ISLAND:

  • Three shelters activated (Zion, Old Bight, Arthurs Town), one occupied with 9 occupants
  • Winds approximately 15 Knots.
  • No reports of flooding (No rain)
  • No reports of damages
  • Land and Cell Lines operational
  • Power still available

 

CROOKED ISLAND:

  • Shelters are activated (Landrail Point and Cabbage Hill, 0 occupants)
  • Winds 75-80 mph
  • Some flooding in areas
  • Damages to homes from wind (windows blown out, loss of shingles)
  • Land and Cell lines intermittent
  • Power intermittent

 

ELEUTHERA (North & South):

  • All shelters are active, none occupied
  • Winds 30-40 mph
  • No reports of flooding at that time (No rain)
  • No reports of damages
  • Land and Cell Lines operational
  • Power still available

 

MANGROVE CAY:

  • Two shelters are activated no occupants
  • No change in weather, overcast, no rain
  • Flooding with high tide
  • No reports of damages
  • Land and Cell Line operational
  • Power still available

 

All of the relevant agencies of the government of The Bahamas are standing by to do a rapid assessment as soon as the weather permits and NEMA will be advising the public on an ongoing basis as to all efforts to bring relief to the affected areas.
