Special Lecture on Disabilities: 3 December 2018
Under the theme Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality, International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) will be observed on 3 December 2018.
Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Special Rapporteur on Disabilities (CSRoD), Senator, Dr. Floyd Morris will give a special lecture, at 6 p.m. (Jamaica time), at the UWI Mona Lions Centre for Students with Special Needs, Mona, Jamaica. The lecture, titled, CARICOM Special Rapporteur on Disability – Driving the Disability Agenda in the Caribbean will be livestreamed on CARICOM Today. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has appointed Senator, Dr. Floyd Morris as a Special Rapporteur on Disability to lead the advocacy on behalf of this vulnerable community, in the implementation of the 2013 Declaration of Pétion Ville.
An estimated 15 per cent (one billion) of the world’s population are persons with disabilities, of which 80 per cent live in developing countries. In the Caribbean, people with disabilities comprise 10% of the Community’s population (World Bank 2011, PAHO 1997)
