Director General of CARIFORUM, Mr. Percival Marie, has implored participants at a Regional Consultation on a revised framework for dialogue among CARIFORUM, FCORs and OCTs to propose practical outcomes that could be used to advise the political directorate. He was speaking at the opening of the consultation which is being held at the Radisson Aquatic Resort in Barbados, 29-30 January 2019.

“This meeting must make pragmatic and practical proposals which would result in the establishment of the institutional framework of the platform that we think is required. This meeting must also establish the norms which would ensure effective operation of the platform, its sustainability and its viability,” Mr. Marie stated

Mr. Marie said the outcomes of the consultation would be subject to further review from Senior Officials of CARIFORUM and the FCORS and British and Dutch OCTs. He said additionally, that the advice of Regional Organisations would be sought before going into more intense sessions at the level of senior officials on the outcomes. This”, he said, would serve as advice and inputs into a political level dialogue. He further advised that discussions were underway to arrange for the political level dialogue by the end of March.

Head of Cooperation from the European Union Delegation in Barbados, Mr. Luis Maia, also spoke at the opening of the Consultation. He reminded officials that the EU had supported efforts to strengthen wider Caribbean cooperation since the 2005 Clovis Beauregard Conference.

We are convinced that cooperation in this region should be strengthened. it is a win-win situation for all countries and territories concerned,” he said.

According to the EU representative, in a world with growing common challenges such as climate change and economic shocks and damage, the territories needed to come to together to maximise resources. He said it was through cooperation and dialogue that new ideas and synergies could be developed. He said he hoped this conference would achieve tangible results.

The consultation is being funded under the 10th EDF Regional Indicative Programme through a dedicated Technical Cooperation Facility (TCF) which, in part, aims to strengthen cooperation among CARIFORUM States, the FCORs and Caribbean OCTs.
